2014 and 2015 were largely consumed with our purchase and restoration of an old corner market with attached house. A true challenge in many ways, it was incredibly fulfilling to be able to reimagine and redesign the interior and exterior of such a complex building. A dream come true for us, we now live in the house portion and run our custom letterpress business, Kavamore Press, out of the storefront.
This was before our time, but an interesting starting point courtesy of google maps.
Cleaned up with a fresh coat of beige-y paint.
When we peeled back the faux-brick siding material encasing the building, we were delighted to discover the original redwood was in great shape beneath. As a bonus surprise, we found original store signage that had been covered over since 1942!
The redwood required extensive scraping, patching & priming. Note that this was after the foundation had been replaced and the building was raised 3 feet to allow for a second story and new floor plan.
Even with extensive photoshop explores, picking actual paint colors was a true leap of faith! We ended up going a little darker and deeper than this original color exploration.
Bathroom theme inspired by vintage subway tilework. Like a station platform, typography on each wall represents location, in this case the street intersection of the building.
The mathematical nature of the tile work made it easy to work through several design iterations in Adobe Illustrator.
Careful work with a razor knife cutting black tile squares into sheets of white tile.
Probably an ambitious project for the first time setting tile, but it turned out as planned.
What was originally a budget constraint became a creative opportunity. Composed typographic stair risers using vintage mercantile crate scraps salvaged on site. Extended the bespoke vintage feeling by covering the screw holes on the treads with countersunk wood plugs.
Collaborated on the design and construction of a large-scale library book shelf. Built from reclaimed lumber and featuring a rolling library ladder, the shelf was designed to take advantage of high loft ceilings and provide a lot of stylish storage.

Two really odd and oddly placed windows inspired this idea of framing the windows amidst a salon-style galley wall.
